What is Psychosynthesis, and how can it support grief?

When I tell people I am a Psychosynthesis Life Coach, they often ask, "What is Psychosynthesis?"

The simplest way I can describe it is this...

Psychosynthesis is a psychospiritual approach to psychology that believes we are already whole.

As we integrate all of our parts, it gently invites us to step into the role of the observer. Rather than identifying pieces of ourselves as good or bad, it asks us to become curious and explore:

"How is this part of me showing up in the world?"

One of the reasons I was drawn to this work is that it welcomes all of us. There is room for our joy, our fear, our anger, our hope, our grief...all of it.

During my training, I would often hear things like, "Make friends with your pain," or "Two souls having a conversation."

"Two souls having a conversation" created a beautiful image in my mind and grounded me in the sacredness of this work.

However, when I first heard, "Make friends with your pain," I paused. That was a very different concept for me.

Over time, I realized this was an invitation to become curious and lean into the places that stir resistance within us.

To me, these two ideas hold the duality of this work—the light and the dark—which are both necessary for soul growth.

One idea that has stayed with me is this:

The soul thrives in both light and dark, and “to allow only the light is to cut off half of the soul” ( Thomas Yeomans)

For me, this is where Psychosynthesis becomes such a beautiful companion to grief work. It lovingly invites us into the darkness. When grief leaves us feeling like there is no room left to expand, it can become an acknowledgment of a transfer of energy, creating fertile ground where new growth begins in the darkness before reaching toward the light. Psychosynthesis gently supports that growth.

When it comes to grief, there are so many layers.

Whether you have lost a loved one, are going through a divorce (which can feel like a death itself), the end of a relationship, the loss of a career, an identity, or a dream—grief comes with all of it.

There are no limits to what grief can touch.

It also reveals what is important to us.

Psychosynthesis doesn't try to rush us through grief. Instead, it invites us to explore the many layers grief holds, trusting they may lead us toward a deeper understanding of ourselves and our souls.

It invites us to sit with it.

Even make friends with it.

To listen.

To witness all the parts that emerge.

Grief is a human experience as well as a soul experience.

Through this exploration, we may discover not only what we've lost, but also what is waiting to grow.

That is why I lovingly call this work Growth From Death.

Whether the ending is literal or symbolic, I believe there is an opportunity for transformation when we are willing to meet ourselves with compassion.
